The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) will fundamentally change how products are brought to market in the EU. Starting in 2027, the first product categories will require a Digital Product Passport. For many companies, this raises urgent questions about preparation, investment, and implementation.

What is the ESPR?

The ESPR replaces the previous Ecodesign Directive and extends its scope far beyond energy-consuming products. The regulation establishes a framework for setting product-specific requirements covering durability, reparability, recyclability, energy efficiency, and the presence of substances of concern. Central to ESPR is the Digital Product Passport (DPP) - a digital data carrier providing comprehensive product information throughout the lifecycle.

Timeline: What's Coming When?

The Commission will adopt delegated acts specifying requirements for different product categories. Batteries were the first priority (Battery Regulation already in force). Textiles, electronics, and construction products are next in line. Companies should not wait for their specific product category to be regulated - preparation takes time.

Key Requirements of the DPP

  • Unique product identifier linked to data carrier (QR code, RFID, NFC)
  • Product composition and material information
  • Carbon footprint data where applicable
  • Repair and recycling instructions
  • Compliance declarations and certifications
  • Supply chain traceability information

Don't Wait

Companies that start preparing now will have a significant competitive advantage. Retrofitting existing products and processes is significantly more expensive than building DPP-ready systems from the start.

What Should Companies Do Now?

Start with a data audit: understand where your product data lives, how complete it is, and what gaps exist. Then evaluate technology solutions that can help automate data collection and standardization. Building internal competencies is equally important - DPP is not just an IT project but requires collaboration across quality, sustainability, and product management.
